Detailed instructions before tests

General instructions before a venous blood sample collection

Instructions for patients:

  • On the day before the test, avoid increased physical activity and intense physical exercise
  • In the afternoon and evening before the test, avoid a fatty diet
  • Unless instructed otherwise by your physician, samples are taken on empty stomach
  • In the morning before the test, drink approximately 1/4 l of water or plain tea
  • If you are allergic to disinfectants or certain types of sticking plaster, please notify the lab personnel without delay
  • If there is a risk you might faint during the blood collection, please notify lab personnel to prevent potential injuries, the sample can be taken while you are lying down
  • You may eat once the sample collection is finished (diabetic patients in particular should take food with them and observe their usual daily routine as soon as possible afterwards)
  • Blood samples are taken based on a request form filled out by your physician. Sample collections without a request form are only possible with a direct payment.
  • Patients should bring their health insurance card for data verification

General instructions before a morning urine sample collection

Instructions for patients:

  • Unless specified otherwise by the physician, tests are always performed on the first urine of the morning
  • You should avoid excessive liquid intake during the night to prevent dilution of the urine
  • The patient is advised to wash their genitals before collecting their urine (to avoid false positive bacteriuria)
  • Take sample of the urine mid-stream
  • The volume should be approximately 10 ml
  • Women should take a urine sample when not on their period
  • A sterile plastic test-tube, or a special sample collection vessel provided by the physician or the lab, is required for bacteriological analysis of urine (samples delivered in other vessels will not be accepted for analysis).
  • For biochemical analysis, urine samples may be delivered in other types of vessels, but they must be clean, dry and free from the residues of the original content (such as medicines, chemicals) prior to collecting a sample. A test-tube may be picked up at the lab any time during its opening hours.
  • Please label the test-tube or other vessel with your name and health insurance number
  • The sample should be delivered for analysis preferably within 1 hour and no later than 2 hours after urination

Instructions for 24-hour urine collection

Instructions for patients:

  • The collection vessel needs to be thoroughly clean and free from any detergent residue
  • In the morning (usually at 6:00 a.m.) urinate for the last time and  begin to collect samples afterwards
  • Keep the vessel containing the urine in a cool and dark place out of direct light
  • Follow your usual diet and drink around 2 litres of liquids during the collection period
  • After 24 hours (i.e. the following day at the same time in the morning, e.g. at 6:00 a.m.) urinate into the vessel for the last time, shake the contents to mix well. You can either deliver the entire contents of the vessel or just a sample. If you plan to only bring a sample, you must measure the exact total volume of the urine you collected.
  • In the request form, please indicate the collection period, your weight and height, and the total amount of urine (if you are taking a small sample)

Analysis can only be performed if all of the instructions are strictly observed!

Instructions for patients before an OGTT
(oral glucose tolerance test = glycaemic index curve)

Instructions for patients:

  • Avoid increased physical activity 2 days before the sample collection
  • Arrive at the lab before 8:00 a.m. and report to the staff
  • Come to the lab on empty stomach (ideally, do not eat 8 hours before the test, i.e. after midnight) and only drink unsugared water (ca 1/4 l)
  • The test takes approximately 2 hours
  • You will be asked to provide a blood sample first
  • After that you’ll drink a diluted glucose solution over a period of 5 to 10 minutes (for OGTT, this is 75g of glucose dissolved in 500 ml of water or very weak tea)
  • After ingesting the solution, you will be asked to sit in the waiting room. Blood samples will be taken 60 and 120 minutes after your exposure to the glucose
  • You must not eat, drink smoke or leave the waiting room in between the blood samples (considered the duration of the test) so please bring something to keep you occupied, such as a book.

About company

NEXTLAB provides fast and accurate laboratory diagnostics on biological material for private GPs, outpatient specialists, hospitals, patients without a health insurance policy, and those who request laboratory services beyond standard testing.

NEXTLAB builds upon 20 years of experience with its own labs and sample collection centres, offering a wide range of lab tests based on the latest diagnostic methods, devices and technologies. Tests that are not carried out in our labs are forwarded to partner labs in compliance with a strict pre-analytical procedure. NEXTLAB labs meet the criteria of Audit II NASKL and ČIA. NEXTLAB has contracts with all major health insurance companies and is flexible enough to provide additional services related to lab diagnostics.
